A registered nurse in the Care Centralized Nurse Triage Program. The director of annual giving and external relations in LSA. A graduate program manager at UM-Flint. They are among the more than 500 employees who volunteer as MHealthy Champions. As Champions, they help to support a culture of well-being and connection among their co-workers.

And now through July 31, any active, benefits-eligible employee can apply to become a Champion for their department, unit or area.

“MHealthy Champions impact both individual and community well-being by helping to enhance their work environments and enrich our campuses at large,” says Karen Schmidt, senior director, Health and Well-being Services. “Having a Champion in your area is an effective way to support U-M’s initiatives like Vision 2034 and the Well-being Collective’s Common Agenda.”

A small commitment equals big benefits

Champions serve a two-year term and commit to approximately two hours per month towards their duties. With MHealthy’s support and guidance, Champions will:

  • Work with an MHealthy Wellness Coordinator to tailor activities for their area.

  • Help their area achieve its health and well-being goals.

  • Communicate MHealthy programs and resources to co-workers.

  • Encourage participation in well-being activities.

  • Have the opportunity to apply for a wellness grant to support their area's well-being.

  • Foster connection in today’s work environment.

“Everyone is so busy caring for others that they rarely are given time or have the energy to explore these options for themselves,” says Kimberly Zaleski, a registered nurse and MHealthy Champion in Michigan Medicine’s Care Centralized Nurse Triage Program. “I enjoy being an MHealthy Champion so I can educate and inform my coworkers of opportunities available to them through the university that support their health and wellness.

Employees interested in becoming a Champion should apply by July 31. Before accepting the application, MHealthy will contact the candidate’s supervisor for approval.
