April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month
Oral cancer is on the rise and heavy drinkers and tobacco users aren’t the only ones at risk.
New research indicates that an increasing number of young people are developing oral cancer related to human papillomavirus (HPV). Although oral cancer is most common in people over age 50, the fastest growing segment of newly diagnosed cases is nonsmoking young adults.
No matter the cause, oral cancer can be deadly, so early detection is important. 80 to 90 percent of oral cancer patients will survive if diagnosed early.
Dentists typically check for signs of oral cancer during routine dental checkups, which many people receive once or twice a year. Every dental appointment is an opportunity to be screened.
In addition to getting regular dental checkups, there are other steps you can take to prevent oral cancer from developing:
- not using tobacco products or quitting if you do
- consuming alcohol in moderation or not at all
- receiving the HPV vaccine
