Two Support Groups Starting Soon - Managing Stress for Early-career Faculty; Managing Anger

The Faculty and Staff Counseling & Consultation Office (FASCCO) formerly known as the Faculty & Staff Assistance Program (FASAP) is offering two new support groups.

Managing Early Career Faculty Stress

This four-week educational support group will assist early-career faculty with managing stress associated with the pre-tenure phase of their academic careers, in order to both enhance their well-being and help them achieve their career goals. The primary focus will be on stress management strategies such cognitive and behavioral approaches, mindfulness, exercise, guided imagery, muscle relaxation, deep breathing, and social support seeking.

Discussion will address pre-tenure sources of stress, e.g., transition to teaching role, publication stress, imposter syndrome, demanding workload, work-life balance difficulties and boundariessetting. Discussion will also include research findings concerning organizational sources of job stress and job engagement, such as the effects of social support, social reward and role clarity.

WHEN: The series will run for four consecutive Wednesdays, February 7 through February 28, 2018.
TIME: 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.

Effectively Managing One's Anger

This four-part series is designed for people who would like to learn how to better understand and more effectively manage their anger.

The class will focus on understanding the anger response, recognizing anger triggers, steps and skills for cool-downs, and other ways to manage anger effectively. It will also explore problem-solving skills and brainstorming appropriate responses to stressful situations.

There is no charge for staff or faculty to attend. Pre-registration is required.

WHEN: The series will run for four consecutive Tuesdays, February 6 through February 27, 2018.
TIME: 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
