Tuesday, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. | Courageous Conversations
Presenters:
- Tina Jordan, Performance Consultant and Educator, U-M Organizational Learning
- Steve Vinson, Ambulatory Services Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Program Manager, Michigan Medicine
The goal of a courageous conversation is to talk about potentially uncomfortable topics with the goal of understanding each other, validating feelings, providing or supporting a psychologically brave environment, caring for each other, and growing the relationship. When successful, courageous conversations are often quite impactful. In order to have better relationships with colleagues, patients, and even our families and friends, it is imperative that we become skilled at having courageous conversations.
In this session, we'll explore principles of courageous conversations, including:
- Why conflict is good;
- how our identities can affect how we hold and interpret courageous conversations;
- humble inquiry;
- the four types of power that affect our communication and relationships (even our brief interactions);
- and guidelines for holding a courageous conversation.
The presenters will also share examples of courageous conversations. (Note: This course is different from the Difficult Conversations microlearning course offered by U-M Organizational Learning.)
